2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV: First Look

When Chevrolet introduced the Bolt EV in 2017, it was by far the most affordable fully electric vehicle with a range of more than 200 miles. The EV landscape has changed considerably since then, and for 2022 so has the Bolt EV. Not only does the entry-level electric car get updated styling and new features, a new vehicle joins the model line: the brand-new 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV electric crossover.

This update to the Bolt line comes mere weeks after GM announced its commitment to offering 30 new global electric vehicles by 2025. “We want to put everyone in an EV and the new Bolt EUV and redesigned Bolt EV are crucial to doing so,” said GM President Mark Reuss. “Together, they enable mainstream customers to be part of our vison of zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion,” Reuss observed.

Chevrolet hopes to draw more shoppers to EVs with the larger and bolder Bolt EUV. “The new Bolt EUV is the best of the Bolt EV packaged in an SUV-like vehicle with more technology and features, giving customers more choices and reasons to switch to electric,” said Vice President of Chevrolet Steve Hill. “This is an opportunity for Chevy to capitalize on the success we’ve built with the Bolt EV and bring new customers into the Chevy family,” Hill asserted.

The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV retains its overall shape, but up front it gets a more upright fascia with slim LED daytime running lights that wrap around the corners, seeming to point at the center-mounted bowtie. The Bolt EV’s LED headlights are positioned lower, flanking the color-keyed “grille.” (An EV has no need for a conventional grille for airflow and cooling, so in actuality the space is where a grille used to be.)

At the rear of the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV sit new LED taillights that stretch horizontally, giving the small car a wide stance — and a more modern appearance than the outgoing model.

Although the two new Bolts look similar, the EUV features more defined sculpting for the grille and front fascia, designed so the new model evokes SUV styling. This appearance gets further enhanced by standard roof rails. The Bolt EUV features high-mounted signature LED running lights similar to the Bolt EV, also with standard LED headlights.

Even though the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV share underpinnings, the two models have distinct appearances — in fact, the two vehicles do not share any exterior sheet metal. “The new Bolt EUV and Bolt EV build on our bold and athletic Chevrolet SUV design themes, but are executed in a uniquely electric way,” said Phil Zak, executive design director at Chevrolet. “These two designs feature excellent proportions and tech-focused interiors, with more premium materials, which are key to our growing EV portfolio,” Zak noted.

The interior dimensions of the Bolt EV haven’t changed much from the previous version, although the new Bolt EUV adds 3 inches of legroom in the rear seat. Overall the Bolt EUV is about 6 inches longer as well as measuring slightly wider and taller. The Bolt EUV has a wheelbase that is 3 inches longer than the standard Bolt EV.

Despite the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV possessing more passenger volume than its smaller sibling, both Bolt EV and Bolt EUV offer about the same space in the cargo area, and it is generous for a small car. With the rear seats folded flat cargo space expands to 57 cubic feet.

The new Bolt EV and Bolt EUV stick with the tried-and-true powertrain found in the previous Bolt EV. A permanent magnet electric motor producing 200 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque drives the front wheels, and instantly available high torque should make both Bolts responsive and great fun to drive. The 65 kWh lithium-ion battery pack delivers an estimated 259 miles in the Bolt EV and 250 miles in the Bolt EUV.

According to Chevrolet, the Bolt EV and EUV add 4 miles of range for every hour plugged into a standard household outlet, so a full charge from empty would take more than 60 hours. However, with a Level 2 charger a full charge can be obtained in about 7 hours, and with a DC fast charger either Bolt can add 100 miles of range in about 30 minutes.

For the 2022 Bolts, Chevrolet plans to offer a new Dual Level Charge Cord that allows owners to plug their vehicles into a standard 110-volt outlet or a 240-volt home outlet, the latter charging at up to 7.2 kilowatts. This cord provides an additional charging option for customers who don’t want to install a new home charger. Alternatively, Chevrolet is working with Qmerit to cover the installation cost of a Level 2 charger for eligible 2022 Bolt EV and Bolt EUV customers

The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV feature a new 10.2-inch touchscreen display that integrates well at the center of the dashboard. A driver-configurable 8.0-inch digital gauge cluster adds to the high-tech feeling of the Bolt line. Other updates include a flat-bottom steering wheel and redesigned seats that feature a triangular geometric pattern and contrasting color stitching.

The Bolt line has a new gearshift that sits in the center console and takes up considerably less space, giving the cabin a more open feeling. Chevrolet also adds a button that engages One Pedal Driving mode, which provides better battery regeneration by allowing the driver to slow and even come to a stop by simply letting up on the accelerator. An additional convenience: One Pedal Driving can be left on — it doesn’t need to be reselected every time a driver starts the vehicle.

Both the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV come with Chevy Safety Assist as standard equipment, which includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, lane-keeping assist with lane departure warning, following distance indicator and front pedestrian braking. Rear cross-traffic alert and adaptive cruise control are also available on both Bolt EV and Bolt EUV.

The Bolt EUV will be the first Chevrolet (and first EV) offered with Super Cruise — a proper hands-free driver-assist technology introduced on the Cadillac lineup. Super Cruise can be used on more than 200,000 miles of enabled roads in North America, allowing the driver to operate the Bolt EUV with both hands off the steering wheel. A Driver Attention System monitors the driver to make certain attention is being paid to the road; if the system determines the driver is inattentive, it provides a warning and eventually disengages.

The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV will arrive in showrooms this summer at a base price of $31,995 and $33,995, respectively. The price of the Bolt EV represents a drop of almost $5,000 compared to the outgoing version. The Launch Edition Bolt EUV will have a base price of $43,495.
